How to Bypass a Wireless Network Adapter

While using a wireless adapter to connect to the Internet eliminates the need for unsightly Ethernet cables, it does have its downside. Wireless networks have bandwidth limitations, taking some of the speed out of a user’s high-speed Internet access. They’re subject to interference from a variety of common devices that use radio frequencies, such as cordless phones and microwaves. And, if you’re using a laptop computer, you’ll find its battery needs to be recharged more frequently when you are connected using a wireless signal. So even if you need to be mobile at times, it’s not a bad idea to plug in an Ethernet cable whenever the opportunity arises. If, after doing so, your computer insists on defaulting to the wireless connection, bypassing the wireless adapter is a relatively simple task.
Step 1Click the Windows “Start” button.
Step 2Click “Control Panel” and select “Network and Internet” to reveal a set of networking options.
Step 3Click the “Network and Sharing Center.”
Step 4Click the "Change Adapter Settings" link in the pane on the left side of the window to reveal a list of connection methods.
Step 5Right-click the wireless network connection and select "Disable" from the context menu. This will prevent you from connecting using a wireless signal.

Tips

  • Many laptop computers allow users to bypass the wireless network adapter simply by flipping a switch. If you're using a laptop and you're not sure if your model is equipped with one, check its documentation.
  • If you use an external antenna to connect to your wireless network, try unplugging it. Your operating system, upon finding the external antenna it to be unavailable, oftentimes will search for another valid connection on its own.
